WOOD HYBRID CONSTRUCTION

New trend requires special fire protection solutions

Hybrid construction is the latest trend in building construction and requires new solutions for fire protection. More and more buildings are being built using timber hybrid construction methods. This makes it necessary to find new fire protection solutions.

VARIO-Baustoffsysteme GmbH has developed a solution for use in hybrid buildings using the universally applicable fire protection sealing compound TENDONOL® as a joint sealant.

With TENDONOL®, there is no need to use a range of different products for sealing joints. TENDONOL® makes it possible to meet all the fire protection requirements with just one material, and can seal joints with widths ranging from 1 to 110 millimetres.

TENDONOL® forms an ideal connection between combustible and non-combustible building components and is used as a joint sealant (assembly joints) between F90 solid walls and glulam trusses, and between hybrid ceilings and the wooden walls that support them. This is exactly how the sealant was used in the Handwerker Haus project in Bremen (Überseestadt district).

The Handwerker Haus in Bremen was constructed using hybrid construction methods within just ten days. The four-storey building was erected as a modular structure, with concrete ceiling slabs and timber walls, all prefabricated in industrial production plants and then assembled on site on conventionally constructed foundations.

The various joints of different widths between the ceilings and walls and between different materials posed considerable challenges with regard to fire protection and adhesion. A joint sealant was needed that would ensure fire protection, ageing resistance and moisture resistance both inside and outside.

With TENDONOL® it is possible to seal joints of any constellation in these types of buildings. In the event of a fire, the intumescent effect helps to permanently seal joints in all areas and ensure fire protection.

It is smoke gases that pose the greatest danger in the event of a fire. TENDONOL® Fire Protection Sealing Compound prevents smoke gases from spreading to other rooms.

Proof of resistance to ageing is provided in accordance with DIN EN ISO 7389. A test to determine resistance to frost and de-icing salts was carried out in accordance with the criteria for underwater concrete.

The fire protection requirements for hybrid construction according to the regulations of M-HBauRL and the encapsulation criterion F260 according to DIN EN 13501-2 are fulfilled, as are the requirements for conventional structures and tunnel construction. Colour designs are possible with commercially available colours.

TENDONOL® Fire Protection Sealing Compound has been on the market for 30 years and is constantly undergoing further development and testing, both in-house and by material testing institutes, to explore new fields of application. TENDONOL® is approved in Germany in accordance with DIN standards, in Europe according to ETA, and for tunnel systems in compliance with RWS. It meets all the specifications in the required areas. Based on the comprehensive test certificates, approvals and test reports from recognised material testing institutes (including for frost/de-icing salt resistance, UV resistance and ageing resistance over 25 years), it has been possible to use the product for special fire-protection sealing applications in the area of columns and beams without any problems.

The material is environmentally friendly (contains no halogens) and is supplied in foil packs.
